Salivary Microbiome Flashcards
name 3 techniques for defining bacteria
conventional culturing (petri dish)
16s RNA sequencing
next generation sequencing
what is 16s sequencing?
The 16s unit is assigned to a general species group
allows us to see all bacterial not just the ones that grow best on a petri dish
what is next generation sequencing?
Sequences the whole genome for more detail
use operational taxonomic units - OTUs
what are operational taxonomic units OTUs?
Derived from 16s
Vary with geographical locations
there is a core salivary microbiome which appears relatively stable.
what are the core organisms common to us all?
Strep. Mitis
Strep. Salivarius
Veillonella
Porphyromonas (red)
Fusobacterium nucleatum (orange)
Actinomyces
what is Sjogren’s syndrome?
no saliva produced
what changes to the salivary microbiome occur due to Sjogren’s syndrome?
drop in protective bacteria and increase in perio pathogens
More lactic acid producing bacteria
- More lactic acid means more veillonella
Increase in prevotella and veillonella
what changes does cancer have on the oral microbiome?
more beta haemolytic streptococci
oral leukoplakia is a potentially malignant white patch. What bacteria are enriched on the surface?
Haemophilus
Fusobacterium
Leptotrichia
Campylobacter
