Salivary Glands Flashcards
Ductal system, and Major salivary Glands
associated with the acinus or terminal
portion of the gland
* lined with a single
layer of cuboidal
epithelial cells
* Myoepithelial cells
may be found
Intercalated duct
- connected to the
intercalated ducts in the
lobules of the gland - lined with a single layer of
columnar epithelial cells
characterized by basal
striations - **striations are due to the
enfolding of the basal
membrane which increases
the surface area of the cell and
allows increased exchange of
ions with the nearby blood
vessels
Striated duct
located in the septum
of the gland
* Saliva exits into the oral cavity
thru this duct
** lined with a variety of epithelial
cells
– at the beginning of the
duct it is lined with
pseudostratified columnar
epithelium which undergoes
transition to stratified cuboidal
as the duct moves to the outer
portion of the gland
* On the outer portion of the duct
that empties into the oral
cavity, the epithelium lining
becomes stratified squamous
epithelium
Excretory duct or secretory
duct
Largest salivary gland ;
encapsulated
* Only produces 25% of total
saliva
* Produces a nearly pure
serous secretion
* Has a short striated duct but
a long intercalated duct
* Main excretory duct is the
parotid duct or Stenson’s
duct
Parotid gland
- 2nd largest salivary gland;
encapsulated - 60 – 65% of total saliva
- Contains both mucous and
serous cells and secretion is of
mixed type - Has a long striated duct; the
intercalated duct is short - Main excretory duct is the
submandibular duct or
Wharton’s duct
Submandibular gland
- Smallest, only unencapsulated
major salivary gland - 5- 10% of total saliva
- Contains both mucous and serous
cells but mucous cells predominate - Secretion is mixed type but mucous
component predominates - Striated ducts are absent or rarely
seen; intercalated ducts are absent - Has a short main excretory duct
called the sublingual duct or
Bartholin’s duct
Sublingual gland
