Oral Mucosa Flashcards
Classification, regional, and clinical appearance
The mucous membrane is tightly bound to the muscle bundles of the tongue smooth and relatively thin
VENTRAL SURFACE OF THE TONGUE
The underlying submucosa
contains fat cells and small
mixed salivary glands
CHEEK
associated with nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium
LINING MUCOSA
Has a rubbery surface texture &
resilient
MASTICATORY MUCOSA
what are the structures associated with keratinized stratified squamous epithelium epithelium?
Attached Gingiva
Hard palate
Dorsal surface of the tongue
Lamina propria has long narrow
papillae, highly interdigitated with the
epithelium giving it a firm base
MASTICATORY MUCOSA
Lamina propria is densely
collagenous
MASTICATORY MUCOSA
Found in the dorsal and lateral surface of the tongue in the form of the lingual papillae
SPECIALIZED MUCOSA
Non-Keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium that can be found in the superficial layers of lining mucosa?
-labial mucosa,
-buccal mucosa
-alveolar mucosa
-soft palate
-floor of the mouth
-ventral surface of tongue
Regional Differences in Oral Mucosa
(Lining Mucosa)?
a. Labial and buccal mucosa
b. Alveolar mucosa
c. Floor of the mouth and ventral surface of the tongue
d. Soft palate
Regional Differences in Oral Mucosa of Masticatory mucosa?
a. Attached gingiva
b. Hard palate
Regional Differences in Oral Mucosa of Specialized mucosa?
a. Dorsal surface of the tongue
Clinical Appearance:
* Appear clinically as an opaque
pink, shiny, moist,
compressible tissue that
stretches easily
* Areas of melanin
pigmentation may be noted
* Fordyce’s spots are scattered
throughout the tissue
Lining Mucosa: Buccal mucosa
Histologic Features
** Nonkeratinized epithelium is
extremely thick which covers
the lamina propria and gives
an opaque and pinkish
appearance
* Lamina propria has irregular
and blunt CT papillae but
contains some elastic fibers as
well as collagen fibers
* *Submucosa contains adipose
tissue and minor salivary
glands
* *Submucosa is firmly attached
to the underlying muscle
Lining Mucosa: Buccal Mucosa
Clinical Appearance
*a reddish-pink tissue with
blue vascular areas
* Shiny, moist and is
extremely mobile
Lining Mucosa: Alveolar Mucosa
Histological Features
* **Has extremely thin nonkeratinized
epithelium that covers but not
obscure the lamina propria which
has an extensive vascular supply
* CT papillae are sometimes absent
* Submucosa contains minor salivary
glands and many elastic fibers in a
loose CT
***Submucosa is loosely attached to
the underlying muscle or bone
Lining Mucosa: Alveolar Mucosa
Clinical Appearance:
* Appear as reddish-pink
tissue with vascular blue
areas of veins
* Moist, shiny and
compressible
Lining Mucosa: Floor of the mouth and ventral surface of the tongue
Histologic Features:
* **Have extremely thin nonkeratinized
epithelium overlying but not
obscuring the lamina propria which
has extensive blood supply
* *Submucosa consists of loose CT with
adipose tissue and includes the
submandibular and sublingual
salivary glands
* **Submucosa is loosely attached to
the underlying bone and muscle
which gives the tissue movability
when the tongue moves during
speech and mastication
Lining Mucosa: Floor of the mouth and ventral surface of the tongue
Clinical Appearance
* *Deep pink with a
yellowish hue and a
moist surface
* **Tissue is compressible
and extremely elastic
to allow for speech
and swallowing
Lining Mucosa: Soft Palate
Histologic Features
* Has a thin nonkeratinized
epithelium overlying a thick
lamina propria
* Lamina propria has numerous
CT papillae and elastic layer for
mobility
** Submucosa is extremely thin
and has firm attachment to the
underlying muscle to allow for
speech and swallowing,
contains adipose tissue which
gives it a yellowish hue and
compressibility and also
contains minor salivary glands55
Lining Mucosa: Soft Palate
Histologic Features
* **Has a thick layer of mainly
parakeratinized epithelium that
obscures the extensive vascular supply
in the lamina propria making the tissue
appear opaque and pink
* Lamina propria has tall, narrow CT
papillae
* The stippling is due to the strong
attachment of the epithelium toward
the lamin propria in these areas
* Submucosa is absent
* **Lamina propria is directly attached to the underlying jawbones making the
attached gingiva firm and immobile 58
Masticatory Mucosa: Attached Gingiva
Histologic Features
***Has a thick layer of
orthokeratinized
epithelium overlying a
thick lamina propria
Masticatory Mucosa: Hard Palate
Clinical Appearance
***The anterior portion of the
palate, the hard palate
appears pink and is immobile
and firm
* The lateral portions of the
hard palate has a cushioned
feeling while the medial
portion has a firmer feeling
* **The palatal rugae and median
palatine raphe are also firm
Masticatory Mucosa: Hard Palate
The submucosa in the anterior part of
the lateral portion (from canine to
premolars) contain adipose tissue
(fatty zone)
** Submucosa in the posterior part of
the lateral portion (molar area)
contain minor salivary glands
(glandular zone)
* Submucosa is absent in the median
portion of the hard palate
** The rugae are folds of epithelium that are supported by dense lamina
propria
Masticatory Mucosa: Hard Palate
