Salivary gland disorders Information Flashcards
Rank from most common to least, salivary glands that have tumors (4 pts)
1- Parotid Gland (64-80%) 2- minor salivary gland (9-23%) 3- submandibular gland (8-11%) 4- sublingual gland (1%)
2 disoders of salivary glands associated with inflammatory and immunological conditions
1- Sjogren syndrome 2- Sialadenitis
4 Malignant neoplasms of salivary glands
1- carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma 2- adenoid cystic carcinoma 3- mucoepidermoid carcinoma 4- salivary adenocarcinoma, NOS (not otherwise specified)
3 Benign neoplasms of salivary glands
1- pleomorphic adenoma 2- papillary cystadenoma lymphomatosum (warthin tumor) 3- Canalicular adenoma
if there is a tumor in a minor salivary gland, what could it most likely be? (differential diagnosis including benign and malignant)
if benign: 1- pleomorphic adenoma (except upper lip - canalicular adenoma) if malignant: mucoepidermoid carcinoma/adenoid cystic carcinoma/polymorphous adenocarcinoma
6 disorders of salivary glands associated with physical and chemical injuries
1- nicotine stomatitis 2- mucus extravasation phenomenon (mucocele) 3- Ranula (subtype of mucocele) 4- mucus duct cyst 5- sialolithiasis 6- necrotizing sialometaplasia
if there is a tumor in the parotid gland, what could it most likely be? (differential diagnosis including benign and malignant)
if benign: 1. pleomorphic adenoma 2. Warthin tumor if malignant: 1. mucoepidermoid carcinoma
if there is a tumor in the submandibular gland, what could it most likely be? (differential diagnosis including benign and malignant)
if benign: 1- pleomorphic adenoma if malignant: 1. adenoid cystic carcinoma
1 Developmental disorder associated with salivary glands
lingual mandibular salivary gland depression (stafne bone cavity)
2 potentially neurological disorders associated with salivary flow
1- Sialorrhea 2- Xerostomia
How do we not confuse a canalicular adenoma with a fibroma?
a canalicular adenoma can be moved around all over the place (because it is below the lamina propria)
3 characteristics of a pleomorphic adenoma
1- firm to palpation
2- asymptomatic
3- mobile
What can happen if we do not treat a pleomorphic adenoma?
Can become malignant
When there is a tumor that is causing partial paralysis or tingling perhaps in a patients face… what are we thinking?
Were thinking the neoplasm is malignant because it is invading/encroaching on the nerve
