Salivary Gland Disorders Flashcards
Inflammation or bacterial infection
Mainly parotid or submandibular
Acute swelling of the gland
Sialadenitis
What are some precipitating factors for sialadenitis?
Dehydration
Chronic illness
Poor oral hygeine
What are some chronic diseases associated with sialadenitis?
Sjogren’s syndrome
DM
Renal failure
Sarcoidosis
What is the pathophysiology for sialadenitis?
Reduction in salivary flow/stasis
Duct obstruction secondary to mucus plugging followed by stasis and
secondary infection (Ascending pathogen from oral cavity – retrograde bacterial contamination)
What is the most common bacterial organism in sialadenitis?
Staph aureus
What is the most common cause of non-suppurative sialadenitis?
Mumps
What is the most common salivary gland affected in sialadenitis?
the parotid
What imaging is used in cases of sialadenitis and why?
CT or US
look for abscess, tumor, stone, stricture
Formation of a calculus/calculi in the salivary ductal system
Sialolithiasis
What gland is most often affected in cases of sialolithiasis?
Submandibular
What is the imaging of choice in sialolithiasis when the stone is not palpable or otherwise apparent on physical exam?
Non-contrast CT
What is the most frequent site of a salivary gland tumor?
Parotid Gland
Most common benign salivary gland tumor is what type?
a pleomorphic adenoma
Most common malignant salivary gland tumors include which two types?
mucoepidermoid carcinoma
adenoid cystic carcinoma
