salivary flow and constituents Flashcards
what kind of solution is saliva?
hypotonic solution
what is the normal volume of saliva a day?
1200ml
what glands make the majority of saliva (%)
major- 90%
minor- 10%
what minor glands are the only to make serous saliva?
serous glands of von ebner glands
what is the normal rest flow rate of salivary?
0.3-.0.5ml/min
where is the majority of saliva produced at rest?
submandibular gland
what is the normal flow rate of saliva?
2-4ml
where is the majority of saliva produced when stimulated?s
parotid gland
is there a gustatory salivary reflex?
yes- citric acid(sour) caused an increase in saliva
is there a mechanical salivary reflex?
yes- chewing ipsilateral to gland= big increase in saliva
contralateral- increase but small
is there an olfactory salivary reflex?
lemon smell-no increase in PG
beef smell- increase in SMgland
- true for SM gland
what else causes increase in saliva?
age- increases up to age 15
what else causes decrease in saliva ?
drugs, sleep/night/dehydration
why does saliva cause mineralisation?
because it is saturated with calcium and phosphate
what negative does mineralising factors of saliva have on teeth?
increases calculus formation
what does flow rate of saliva in turn increase?
increases the pH
what is the purpose of amylase in saliva?
breakdown carbohydrates to starch
what inactivates amylase?
stomach acid
what is the function of lipase?
breaks down lipids/fats
what do mucins make up the majority of?
90% of the pellicle
what do mucins coat?
oral and soft tissues
what is the function of slatherin?
prevents precipitation of calcium and phosphate- therefore initially reduces calculus formation and prevents mineralisation of saliva stones
