salivary biology Flashcards
name the areas of the salivary glands
acini to intercalated ducts to striated ducts to secretory ducts
what area of the gland produces saliva?
acini
what part of the gland modifies saliva?
striated duct
what are acini cells surround by?
myoepothelial cells
what is the function of my-epithelial cells?
contractile function- push salivary along ducts
what are the three types of acini?
serous acinis
mucous acini
serous demilunes acini
what are the features of serous acini? (parotid)
-prominant basal nuclei
-stain dark pink
-granular
what are the features of mucous acini? (sublingual)
- squashed basal nuclei due to large mucin granules that do not stain
-pale pink stain
what are the features of the serious demilunes? submandibular
mix of each
where is the nucleus of the intercalated cells?
central nucleus
what else is a feature of intercalated cells?
myoepithelium contracts to push flow of saliva
what gland does not have striated cells?
sublingual
what is the purpose of striated folds?
gives a larger surface area for exchange
where is the nucleus in striated cells?
basal-but striated ends make it look like its not
what is the purpose of striated ducts?
modification of saliva
