Saliva Flashcards
Importance of saliva
Oral hygiene, wash, immunity, buffer, digestive enzymes
Is the parotid gland serous or mucous?
Serous
The submandibular and sublingual glands are both
mucous and serous
Lots of new research into saliva testing
Potential use for testing for hormones, TB, cystic fibrosis, LFT for alcohol testing and for Covid.
Structure of salivary glands
Acinar cells (make saliva) and ducts (carries it into mouth)
2 Types of acini
Serous (dark staining, small central duct, secrete water and alpha amylase) and mucous (pale staining, ‘foamy’, large central duct secrete mucous)
Intercalated intralobular ducts
Short narrow duct segments with cuboidal cells that connect acini to larger striated ducts
Striated intralobular ducts
Striated, major site for reabsorption of NaCl.
Basal membrane highly folded into microvilli, many mitochondria, active transport of HCO3 against conc. gradient.
Ducts secrete K+ and HCO3- and reabsorb…
Na+ and Cl-
Where are minor salivary glands found?
Lips, cheeks, hard and soft palate, tongue
Xerostomia
Dry mouth, could be due to cystic fibrosis or medication or irradiation head and neck cancers)
Stimulation of ___ nerves causes the production of saliva
Parasympathetic
Sympathetic stimulation selectively causes secretion of __ and ___.
Protein and glycoprotein
