• Inhibit synthesis of prostaglandin
• Can block the inflammatory response
• Have antipyretic properties (fever-blocking)
• Have analgesic (pain-blocking) properties

Salicylates Indications
- used to treat mild to moderate pain and fever
- Aspirin: Treats inflammatory conditions
- Mesalamine: Treats inflammation of the large intestine
Salicylates Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindications:
• Known allergy
• Bleeding abnormalities
• Impaired renal function

Hx: allergy, Disease, bleeding disorders, chickenpox or influenza in children, pregnancy and lactation
Physical: vital signs, skin, temp, orientation and reflexes, perfusion, liver evaluation and monitor bowel sounds (baseline)
Labs: kidney, liver function

- Acute pain: to CNS, GI effects
- Ineffective breathing pattern is toxic effects occur
- Disturbed sensory perception is toxic effects occur
- Deficient knowledge: drug therapy

Implementation:
• Administer with food if G.I. upset is severe; provide small, frequent meals
• Check all drugs being taken for possible salicylate ingredients
• Monitor for severe reaction
• Ensure the patient is well hydrated during therapy
• Provide thorough patient teaching
