Secure location and inspection of equipment
- Close off work area, leaving a buffer past the pruning zone
- Inspect the lift or ladder for broken or non-functioning parts. If equipment is faulty notify foreman or manager to tag it as unsafe
- Look for hazards both above and below
Plant material that overhangs the area
-Wires and/or cables
-The building itself
-Uneven ground - Turn off fans
Before hydraulic lift use
-Inspect and test controls
-Check battery is charged
-Look for hydraulic leaks
-Check that cables have no kinks and are correctly placed in relation to pulleys
-Ensure solid footing, using blocks if needed
-Level the machine
-Risk assessment
Hydraulic lift steps for use
-Position lift under plant to be pruned keeping in mind basket position
-Mount legs into place and secure pins.
-Use boards under legs on soil
-Level machine
-Turn lift on and check for safety lights
-Check position of safety stop buttons
-Secure pruning tools
-Slip tether into place
Hydraulic Lift PPE
-Harness and tether
-Hard hat
-Safety glasses
-Buddy system, never work alone. Have someone available in case of emergency
Ladder Safety
-Set up ladder correctly with spreaders locked in place
-Always face ladder when ascending or descending
-Always have 3 points of contact
-Don’t overreach
-Ensure the ladder footings are on level and firm ground. Use a wood board to level footings as needed.
-Never use on steps
-Do not go above the pelvis on a ladder and never on the top step
-Drop all material in a controlled manner
-Do not use if bent, missing parts
Skid Steer Safety
o Eye contact at all times
o Never go behind the machine
o No one under bucket ever
o Bucket down when vehicle is moving
o Never run with bucket up and full
Skid Steer Communication
Fist = stop
Finger up/down = fork up or down
Cup tips away = fork points to ground
Cup tips toward = fork points up
Two hands =demonstrate distance between machine and objects
