Q

Bomb Threat Air Crew Procedures - On The Ground

A

The aircraft should be directed to the designated search area.
* The Captain may if time permits contact the Flight Attendant and brief
him/her on the nature of the incident and the plan of action.
* The Captain will use the PA system and read the ‘Bomb Threat on the
Ground’ PA from the QRH.
* Upon hearing the PA the Flight Attendant will stand at their station
whilst the Captain addresses the passengers. The Flight Attendant will
then proceed to open the L1 door (extend the stairs) if not already
opened and commence the rapid disembarkation once the First Officer
is physically guarding the propeller.
* Passengers will rapidly disembark leaving all of their carry on baggage
and personal belongings on the aircraft.
* The First Officer will direct passengers to a safe area clear from taxiways and runways, using a torch at night if necessary.
* The First Officer should closely supervise passengers ensuring tarmac
safety. No use of mobile phones or smoking is allowed.
* The Flight attendant will stay at their L1 station in case the Captain has
any further information to relay to them.
* Keep in mind the captain can upgrade the rapid disembarkation to an
emergency evacuation at any time. In this circumstance the air stairs
would be left in the extended position.
* Once all passengers have disembarked the Flight Attendant will check
the cabin to ensure there are no remaining passengers on board the aircraft, the Flight Attendant and Captain will then disembark the aircraft
taking the passenger manifest to ensure all passengers are accounted
for.

Q

Bomb Threat Air Crew Procedures – In Flight

A

The Captain must decide to continue to the destination airport, return to the
departure airport or divert to another airport. He/she must advise ATC of his/
her intentions.
The Captain must contact the Flight Attendant and brief him/her
accordingly.
The Captain must then make the following announcement using the PA
system:
“Ladies and Gentlemen: This is Captain……………… speaking. We are
returning to ……………… airport [or diverting to ……………… airport] at
the request of our company and will give you further details
immediately after landing.”

If the Captain requests an in-flight bomb search and an article arousing
suspicion is found:
* move passengers as far away as possible from the article arousing suspicion,
* remove portable oxygen bottles, bottles of alcohol and first aid kits
from the immediate vicinity, and
* ensure fire-fighting equipment is readily available.
If a Flight Attendant finds an article arousing suspicion, he/she must contact
the flight deck immediately, and advise him/her of the article’s:
* exact location, and
* general appearance.

If the Captain requests an article arousing suspicion to be moved to the
‘Most Preferred Bomb Location’ the Captain will advise the Flight
Attendant as per the QRH.
