completely read the lab manual pertaining to the safe operation of lab equipment to be used
What to wear and what not to wear
No loose,baggy clothes, unbuttoned coat, unbuttoned sweaters
no necties, scarves, necklaces
footwear closed toe shows
confine or tie hair that reaches shoulders
safety goggles
cellphones
turned off since distraction to safe op of equipment
before beginning experiment
locate lab exits
locate safety equipments
read lab manual for instructions on procedures and safe operating procedures
inspect all lab equipment
notify lab instructor
in the event of any hazardous conditions observed
while using lab equipment
keep alert for any developing safety hazards
shut down equipment in event of developing hazardous conditions
do only the assigned project
if fire alarm sounds, shut down equipment and leave building asap
in the event of a fire
if minor, shut down equipment, notify instructor, extinguish with nearby fire extinguisher
if major, leave lab and close door, report exact location of fire
in the event of injury
notify instructor and contact emergency personnel
in case of earthquake
turn off equipment and seek cover when equipment is turned off
other considerations
need at least 2 people in room
never operate equipment w/o instructor knowledge
do not eat, drink, smoke in lab
fluids in the lab
be aware of standing fluids
handle fluids such as petroleum products carefully and keep safely stored
rotationary equipment
never stand in the plane of rotation of a rotating coupling system such as between a motor and a pump.
