Pelton Wheel Turbine Flashcards
objective
determine the characteristics of a pelton wheel hydraulic turbine; specifically torque and power as a function of turbine speed
equipment: pelton wheel
pelton wheel turbine is driven by a jet of water issuing from a nozzle and striking the buckets on the wheel
the jet causes the wheel to rotate producing torque and power output
equipment: digital tachometer
turbine wheel rotational speed measured by a digital tachometer
equipment: brake system
measures torque
equipment: spear valve
controls the volume flow rate
equation: torque on wheel
Torque = (Force 1 - Force 2) Radius of brake wheel
equation: power produced from turbine
Power = RPM of turbine * Torque of turbine * (2 * pi / 60)
procedure
close spear valve on turbine inlet and close flow control valve
turn on pump and fully open the valve
slowly open spear valve until fully open, allowing jet to drive pelton wheel
increase load on pelton wheel by adjusting knob above both spring balancing forces
repeat steps 5-5 for seven different turbine speeds from 150-750 rpm
record volumetric flowrate by pluggine up drain and record time to reach a certain volume
repeat 3-7 for each speed
close spear valve when finished
