pipe friction Flashcards
objective
study pressure drop in pipes caused by shear stress for different pipe diameters and pipe materials
pressure drops analyzed as a function of pipe length and flowrate in order to calculate pipe friction coefficient and absolute roughness
equipment
water loop
water tank and pump supply water to pipe test rack
pipes 10ft long with pressure taps every two feet. measure pressure drop over 2, 4, 6, 8, 10ft
pipes
nominal 3/4” and 1” steel pipes and nominal 3/4” pvc pipes
procedure
open ball valves on each test pipe
ensure ball valve on return line set to correct position
slightly open flow control valve and then turn on pumps
open flow control valve until one of diff pressure gauges reach max or valve fully opened
read diff pressure gaugaes for pressure drop for each gauge
repeat prior steps for 80, 60, 40, 20% of max flow
close flow control valve, turn off pumps
conserve of energy
(pressure diff) / specific weight of fluid = darcy friction factor * (length/diameter) * (velocity squared / 2*gravity)
