Safety In Animal Research Flashcards
1
Q
What are the classes of hazard?
A
- Chemical
- Physical
- Drug
- Allergen
- Fire and evacuation
2
Q
What are chemical hazards?
A
- Explosives
- Carcinogenic/Teratogenic
- Corrosive/caustic/acidic
- Radioactive
3
Q
What are physical hazards?
A
- Lifting heavy weights
- Animal bites
- Crush injuries
- Trips, slips, falls
- Splashes E.g. eyes
- Sharps
4
Q
What are sharps injuries?
A
Any skin puncture -> what was introduced into the wound?
5
Q
What are biological hazards
A
Infectious agents being used, zoonoses, pregnant/immunocompromised
6
Q
What are zoonoses?
A
Any disease or infection that is transmissible from animals to humans
7
Q
What are drug hazards?
A
Anesthetics, carcinogens, controlled drugs, radiation, excretions, carcasses
8
Q
How do you deal with allergen hazards?
A
Use PPE and RPE (FFP3)
9
Q
How do you deal with fire and evacuation?
A
Turn off gases, return animal to cage/euthanise, get out
10
Q
How do you manage risks?
A
- Identify hazards
- Quantify risks
- Reduce the risks (minimize chance of going wrong and harm, maximize chance of being detected)
