- Where is the safety equipment located in the laboratory and how is it used?
goggles, aprons, gloves, eyewash, fire blanket, fire extinguisher
goggles
On the back wall-anytime labs with possible eye hazards are performed goggles must be worn, then sterilized in the cabinet between classes.
aprons
various locations in the classroom-are used when chemicals are used in a lab.
gloves
in the chemical cabinet-are used whenever haNd hazards are possible.
eyewash
by the exit door in front of room-used only when a substance has been splashed into eyes.
fire blanket
by the front exit door-used only if a fire breaks out. Used by teacher unless directed otherwise. Generally used for people.
fire extinguisher
by the goggle cabinet-used by teacher when there is a fire. Generally used on inanimate objects.
- How do you determine what safety equipment should be used?
By looking at an MSDS sheet OR by reading the material list OR when teacher says to use it.
- What rules should be followed for laboratory safety?
All lab safety rules, any special rules listed on your lab procedures
- How do you handle and dispose of chemicals and glassware?
Specific chemical disposal will be outline in your lab directions or you will be directed by the teacher on proper disposal of chemicals after the lab is complete. Do NOT pour any chemicals into the lab sinks unless instructed to do so.
