Chemistry-Atomic Structure Flashcards
- What are the parts of an atom?
Protons, Neutrons, Electrons,
- How are the parts arranged in an atom? Be able to identify the parts in a diagram.
Protons and Neutrons are in the Nucleus - Electrons are in the Electron cloud outside the nucleus
3.What is the charge on each part of the atom? What is the total charge on an atom?
Proton positive, Neutron no charge, Electron -Negative When equal amounts of Protons and Electrons the atom has a neutral or no charge
4.What determines the identity of an element?
Number of Protons
5.What is meant by atomic number?
Total number of protons in the nucleus of the atom
6.What is the relationship between an atom and an element?
An element is made up of only ONE type of atom
7.What are the valence electrons?
Electrons that are left over in the outer most energy level
8.How does the number of valence electrons affect the reactivity of an atom?
The fewer valence electrons an atom holds, the less stable it becomes and the more likely it is to react.
Atomic Number
The number of protons in an atom
Electron
A negatively charged subatomic particle found in the space outside the nucleus
Electron Cloud
A visual model of the most likely locations for electrons in a atom
Electron Configuration
The arrangement of electrons in the orbitals of an atom
Energy Levels
The possible energies that an electron in an atom can have
Isotopes
They are elements that have the atomic number but different mass number
Mass Number
The sum of of the protons and neutrons in an atom
