Chemistry-Periodic Table of Elements Flashcards
- How are physical properties used to group elements?
Similar physical and chemical characteristics: remember the activity of the missing family member
- What are the physical properties of luster, malleability, and conductivity?
Luster: the ability to reflect light, Malleability: the ability of metals to be molded into shapes, Conductivity: the ability of elements to transfer electricity
Luster
the ability to reflect light
Malleability
the ability of metals to be molded into shapes
Conductivity
the ability of elements to transfer electricity
- What information can be determined from the cell or box of an element on the periodic table?
Element Name, symbol, atomic mass(mass number) atomic number
- How is the information in the cell or box of an element used to arrange elements on the periodic table?
Increasing atomic number
- What is the difference between groups and periods on the periodic table?
Group, family is vertical and shows elements of similar physical and chemical properties, Period is a row of elements whose properties change gradually and predictably
- What are the properties of non-metals?
Usually gases or brittle solids at room temperatures, poor conductors of heat and Electricity ONLY 17 of them
- What are the properties of metalloids?
Shares some properties with metals and some with nonmetals
- What is the atomic mass of an element?
Total number of protons PLUS neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
- Where on the Periodic Table are metals, non-metals and metalloids found?
Non metals are found in groups1 and 14-18, Metalloids are found in groups 13 - 17,Metals are found in groups 1 - 15
- What are properties of metals?
Has luster, good conductor of heat and electricity, is malleable and ductile
