Q

What is Multi-disciplinary working in the health and social care sector?

A

Different care professionals often work together as a team to promote the health and wellbeing of the service users. The care manager of a residential home may work with GP’S district nurses, and physiotherapists to meet needs of residents. Child social workers may work with health visitors, school nurses, schoolteachers, and educational psychologists. Teams may include voluntary organisations. Emergency services may be required. Co-operation like this is known as a multi-disciplinary team (A team involving health and social care workers from many different backgrounds)

Q

The need for collaborative working between other service providers

A

It’s essential for care workers to work as a team, there have been a number of cases of child abuse such as Victoria Climbie in 2000 and Baby P in 2007 which have ended tragically due to the lack of collaboration between service providers.

Q

How do you Involve service users, carers, advocates in multidisciplinary team?

A

At formal team meetings it will be expected that, where possible, the service user, their advocate, translator/interpreter will be present alongside informal carers and other professional staff who contributed to planning, support and evaluation of the care.
The service user and their representative’s presence ensures the empowerment of the service user and therefore a higher chance of views and preferences to be expressed, which will better the support

In a larger setting, there will be senior care workers who manage a team of care assistants on behalf of the care manager, the linne manager is responsible for addressing issues and acting upon these, the first instance may involve a warning/ conversation, and formal action may be taken upon the second offence.
