What to practitioners do when dealing with conflict?
Listen Carefully
Stay Calm
Try to see both sides of an argument
Never resort to aggression
If it seems the situation may lead to violence:
Make sure you know where doors/ exit points are
Remove anything that can be used as a weapon
Allow the aggressor personal space
Summon help as soon as possible (Panic alarm, shouting for help, calling police or security)
What is challenging behaviour?
Challenging behaviour could be defined as any behaviour that puts the service user or anybody else in the setting at risk, or significantly affects the quality of life. This may include excessive rudeness, aggression, self-harm, and disruptiveness.
Where may conflict erupt in any setting?
Professional carers and other staff should be trained to deal with conflict. Conflict may erupt in any care setting, such as GP practices, hospital wards, residential care homes for people with disabilities or providing domiciliary care.
How may conflict arise?
Conflict may develop between service users and their doctors and/ nurses
between care workers and their clients and between care workers and their clients
between the service users themselves or their informal carers.
