Define dental neglect
Persistent failure to meet a Childs basic OH needs, likely to result in the serious impairment of a childs oral + general health or development (British Society of Paediatric Dentistry 2009)
3 stages to safeguarding
- Preventative dental team management
- Preventative multiagency management
- Child protection referral
What does preventative dental team management entail?
- Raise concerns with parents
- Offer support
- Set targets
- Keep records + monitor progress
What does preventative multi-agency management involve?
Raise concerns with other professionals (health visitor, school nurse, GMP, social worker)
Agree joint plan + review times
Send letter to health visitor of children <5 who fail appts + fail to respond to GDP letters
When do we send a letter to HV on basis of dental neglect?
Children <5 who fail to attend appts and have failed to respond to letter from GDP
What does child protection referral involve?
Complex/deteriorating situations
Refer to social services by phone + follow up in writing
If child in immediate danger after referral lets to child protection order/removal by police
Index of suspicion criteria
Delay in seeking help
Vague changing story
Story + injury incompatible
Abnormal parent mood
Concerning child behaviour
Nature of relationship between parent+child
Hx of prev injury
Child story contradictory
Who has parental responsibility?
Mum
Father married to mum
Father on birth certificate
If not above, need parental responsibility agreement
