FS steps involved

A
  1. Clean tooth
  2. Isolate CWR/dry guard/saliva ejector
  3. Etch 35% phosphoric acid 15s
  4. Cure 20s
  5. Check sealant w sharp probe, no airblows, not flown inter proximally
  6. Review 6mths clinically 12-18mths radiographically

Describe FV to pt and how it is placed

A

F is a mineral that helps prevent tooth decay
It can be found in toothpaste + FV
FV is a pale yellow gel painted onto teeth, tastes + smells fruity

Why do we use FV?

A
  1. We use FV as there are many EB studies that show its benefits in fighting decay
  2. Recommended by SDCEP for caries prev in children 2+, standard procedure for all kids
    - 2x yearly low risk, 4x yearly high risk
    - It may also be used in your nursery/school through ChildSmile
  3. It is more effective than toothbrushing as it has an increased concentration of F (22,600ppm>1450)

Properties of FV

A

Hardens tooth enamel, forming a protective barrier and stopping tooth from softening from acid attacks from diet that demineralise the tooth and make it more susceptible to decay

Procedure for FV

A

Very simple procedure
Wash dry teeth paint it on all the teeth sets with saliva

What is the aftercare?

A

No food/drink for 1hr
No milk for rest of day
Soft diet for rest of day - helps FV stay on teeth longer
Brush as normal at night

I’ve heard too much F is harmful?

A

Yes too much is harmful but important to know we use a safe amount - regulated, quantity set and controlled

Brushing 2x daily with pea sized amount + FV = LOW RISK
Use as instructed pea sized, supervise brushing under 7, spit don’t swallow

Side effects of too much fluoride: motting/fluorosis

What is fluorosis

A

This is when white spots appear on teeth due to excessive F being ingested during permanent tooth formation
Ingesting too much F under 3-6yrs damages the appearance of perm incisors/premolars
