FS/FV/Plaque scores/BPE Flashcards
Describe FS to pt
Protective plastic coating painted into grooves of teeth to prevent food and bacteria getting caught in them and causing decay
Standard SDCEP Guidance for FS/FV use
FS - all perm molars on eruption
FV - 2x yearly
High risk SDCEP Guidance for FS/FV use
FS - 4,5,6,7,2s,D+Es
FV - 4x yearly
FS steps involved
- Clean tooth
- Isolate CWR/dry guard/saliva ejector
- Etch 35% phosphoric acid 15s
- Cure 20s
- Check sealant w sharp probe, no airblows, not flown inter proximally
- Review 6mths clinically 12-18mths radiographically
Indications for GI FS

Describe FV to pt and how it is placed
F is a mineral that helps prevent tooth decay
It can be found in toothpaste + FV
FV is a pale yellow gel painted onto teeth, tastes + smells fruity
Why do we use FV?
- We use FV as there are many EB studies that show its benefits in fighting decay
- Recommended by SDCEP for caries prev in children 2+, standard procedure for all kids
- 2x yearly low risk, 4x yearly high risk
- It may also be used in your nursery/school through ChildSmile - It is more effective than toothbrushing as it has an increased concentration of F (22,600ppm>1450)
Properties of FV
Hardens tooth enamel, forming a protective barrier and stopping tooth from softening from acid attacks from diet that demineralise the tooth and make it more susceptible to decay
PROMOTE REMINERALISATION
PREVENTS DEMINERALISATION
Procedure for FV
Very simple procedure
Wash dry teeth paint it on all the teeth sets with saliva
What is the aftercare?
No food/drink for 1hr
No milk for rest of day
Soft diet for rest of day - helps FV stay on teeth longer
Brush as normal at night
I’ve heard too much F is harmful?
Yes too much is harmful but important to know we use a safe amount - regulated, quantity set and controlled
Brushing 2x daily with pea sized amount + FV = LOW RISK
Use as instructed pea sized, supervise brushing under 7, spit don’t swallow
Side effects of too much fluoride: motting/fluorosis
What is fluorosis
This is when white spots appear on teeth due to excessive F being ingested during permanent tooth formation
Ingesting too much F under 3-6yrs damages the appearance of perm incisors/premolars
What are FV contraindications (4)
Ulcerative gingivitis
Stomatitis
Allergy to colophony
Severe asthma (hospitalised in last 12mths)

F properties
Bacteriocidal - demin/remin
Desensitises - seals dentinal tubules
Converts hydroxyapatite–> fluoroapatite
