Saddle Stitching (stapling) Systems Flashcards
What is stapling
Preformed, pre-cut wire
What is saddle stitching
Stitching steel wire (cut to certain length) shaped to a U then Fixed shut in machine
What is saddle stitching
Bindery process design for long runs
Fast speed
Inexpensive
What is the limitations of saddle stitching
Fold directly in the middle to put all sheets & can only go through 3/16th of paper (paper is hard and heavy)
Limited in comparison to perfect binding
What’s the name of the inserting Sticher machine
Muller Martini amigo plus perfect binder
What’s the name of our saddle Sticher downstairs
Muller martini Varlord saddle Sticher
What are some characteristics associated with the muller martini inserting machine
All modular designs Multiple pocket feeders 3-knife trimmer (up to 5 knife b/c 2 up booklets) Belt, pocket or stack delivery Twin compact pocket feeder
How many ppl does it take to run saddle stitcher
It’s a 3 person job
Thicker signatures will run out of pockets faster than Thinner
True
How many ppl does it take to run saddle Sticher
3 person crew
The take off person is at what end of the machine
Delivery end
Describe the reel system
All sigs come of folder/press
Feed onto rotating belt that folds up
Sigs rotating a but and held up by a reel
Reel systems are inexpensive. T or F
FALSE. Reel systems are expensive! But very productive
What are some saddle stitching Fundamentals?
Saddle stitched books (inserted signatures)
Number sigs outside to inside
Assembled inside out until you get to cover
Saddle stitched compared to other methods
Needs a lip so machine can open sings (that’s e our pose of a lip)
Feeding pockets are
Capable of feeding 3 pockets
Can add more at same height
Ppl run btwn pockets and stored sigs
How many drums does drum feeder use
3 drums to open sigs to drop into saddle
In a drum feeder sigs are:
Piled ontop supported by feet
After sigs are piled ontop what happens to the sigs
Opening moves feet out of the way sucker sucks up sig from bottom of pile and pulls it down into gripper
Drum #1 pushes lip onto gripper with 1 drum rotating away motion until the motion opens up the signature
What should you do if y don’t have a lip
Install suckers to grab (allot of work and slow production

Describe the roll-off feeder
Pile ontop of rotating suckers (3) suckers also rotate within drum
Grabs spine edge rotates inside the drum
Rotates some edge into clamp flatteners sig into sheet holder
Deflects into rollers
More control on sheet
What are the 2 types of feeders
- Pincer grips sig and puts onto raceway
2. Pincer grip sigs and puts onto drum feeder
