Mechanical Binding Flashcards
What is mechanical binding
– standard, inexpensive, for short runs -‐ usually sits on your desktop -‐ usually some kind of hole is punched -‐ Comb, Cerlox, Spiral, Coil, Wire-‐O, Velo, Tape -‐ sheets must be coallated & trimmed before binding
What is cerlox
Also known as comb binding Least durable Least expensive Machine pushes holes & opens up to bind Plastic comes in many colours & sizes Reusable pages Pages don’t lay perfectly flat when turning
What’s plasticoil & spiral binding?
Puch wide circular hole Spiral made out of plastic or metal Lays paper perfectly flat Custom colours Faster than cerlox The end is crimmed (cut and bent) Left and right pages don’t line up properly
What are some example products by cerlox mechanical binding
Cookbooks, calendars, manuals (The lay “almost” flat)
Describe Velo binding
4-6 holes 2 plastic stripes & 1 has a post Machine cuts & heats strip of plastic Binding is permanent (tight close) Comes in diff colours & expensive plastics
Describe wire-o
Looks like a “C” when opened Continuous piece of wire, comes in rolls that are pre-formed Insert sheets into opening “c” then close it Can do at any length Lays flat and can go all the way The “c” has to close so paper doesn’t fall out MOST expensive type of mechanical binding
Describe tape binding
Least amount of material Doesn’t need holes Tape with heat activated glue Middle page not secure b/c it’s holding onto small amount of glue Tape has diff thicknesses and colour , depends on book size Can be AUTOMATED
What are some shipping considerations
Coils,cerlox,wire-o, Velo (think about spine size) Take extra space in box Can get crushed or scratched
What are some production considerations
Height of lift Length of spine (could be pre-cut) Thumb cut abilities (wire-o) rotated all around Speed of cycle
