What are sacraments?
-Sacraments are often described as ‘outward signs of an inward grace.
-Catholics believe the sacraments were instituted (started) by Jesus and were given to the Church to bless and strengthen the faith of God’s people.
What are 2 examples of sacraments of initiation?
-Baptsim
-Eucharist
What is baptism?
-Where original sin is washed away, bringing the baby or person closer to God.They begin a new life as a disciple of Jesus and a member of his Church.
- Baptismal promises are made to
show signs of faith in God e.g. to be lights of the world
-“Baptism is necessary for salvation”-The Gospels
What is the Eucharist?
-the sharing of the bread and wine represetitive of the body and blood of Jesus
-The Eucharist is spiritual food which sustains Catholics in their faith.
Catholics believe that Jesus died as a sacrifice and by remembering this and sharing in the Eucharist, they hope to be worthy of salvation.
-“this is my body”
What are 2 examples of vocational sacraments?
-Matrimony(marriage)
-Holy Orders
What is Matrimony?
-Joining a couple as one, to serve one another and others.Vows are made to one another and wedding rings are blessed and exchanged
-The couple’s love for each other reflects the love that Christ has for the Church.
This love strengthens them to serve one another and others to bring them closer to God and salvation.
-“one flesh”
What are Holy Orders?
-Becoming a deacon, priest or bishop in order to bring others closer to God.
The man is anointed with chrism to show that he has been called to a life of service.
-Deacons, priests and bishops can help people to form a deeper relationship with God, such as through the sacraments, which will help them to achieve salvation.
