  • intensive farming practises are becoming more common as the demand for cheaper meat go up
  • chickens are housed in wire cages which are very crowded and each hen has a A4 sheet of paper space
  • the temp and lighting in the sheds is controlled to maximise the egg production
  • no access to nesting boxes or perches
  • the chickens have been genetically selected and bred so they grow rapidly and are suitable for slaughter in 42 days
  • the rapid growth puts great physical stress on the birds and can lead to significant health issues
  • may die from heat stress
