Define ethics
A
A set of moral principles that are motivated by ideas of right and wrong, or good and bad

how do ethics apply to food product choice
A
- if chicken meat was produced in a factory farm or in a free-range environment
- if farmers who produce the food are making a fair wage
- where fruit was grown

A
- intensive farming practises are becoming more common as the demand for cheaper meat go up
- chickens are housed in wire cages which are very crowded and each hen has a A4 sheet of paper space
- the temp and lighting in the sheds is controlled to maximise the egg production
- no access to nesting boxes or perches
- the chickens have been genetically selected and bred so they grow rapidly and are suitable for slaughter in 42 days
- the rapid growth puts great physical stress on the birds and can lead to significant health issues
- may die from heat stress

- cows spend between 50-120 days being fattened up for market
- overcrowding and lack of shade in the feedlot
- possibility of water, air and noise pollution
