SAAB 340B Fire Protection Flashcards
How is tailpipe overheating detected?
By 3 temperature sensors located around each engine tailpipe
TAIL P HOT Lights (red) indicates?
Tailpipe overheating is detected on the related engine
When will the light(s) extinguish?
Only when the temperature decreases sufficiently
How is engine fire detection accomplished?
By electronic controllers which monitor the respective nacelle for excess temp increase
Electronic controllers receive power from?
The Emergency Bus
Fire detection results in? (4 items)
Illumination of associated FIRE handle - Firebell activation
Fire detection results in? (4 items)
Illumination of associated FIRE handle - Master warning alerting
Fire detection results in? (4 items)
Illumination of associated FIRE handle - Respective flashing red ENG FIRE
How are the warning flashers and firebell cancelled?
Depressing either master warning flasher or Pulling illuminated FIRE handle
How long will the FIRE handle and CWP indication remain illuminated?
Until the nacelle temperature decreases sufficiently
How does the engine fire detection loops work?
Heat buildup causes the loops resistance to decrease which activates engine fire alerting
What defines a short circuit of the fire detection loop?
A rapid decrease in loop resistance and renders the loop unreliable
Amber FIRE DET FAIL light illuminated?
Flashing when a short circuit is detected in the fire loop on the related engine - Remains illuminated as long as short circuit condition exits
Location of the engine fire extinguisher bottles?
Equipment compartment of each engine nacelle
Can each bottle be used for the other engine?
Yes, bottles are interconnected to permit selective discharge to either engine nacelle
When are the FIRE EXTG switches armed?
Only when an engine FIRE handle is pulled
What is the purpose of the FIRE EXTG switch?
Electrically fires a pyrotechnic squib which punctures the port pressure seal for release of the Halon agent
The left main and right reserve squibs are supplied by what electrical bus?
Left Hot Battery Bus
The right main and left reserve squibs are supplied by what electrical bus?
Right Hot Battery Bus
What are the oral warnings of an ENG FIRE, TAIL P HOT and FIRE DET FAIL?
ENG FIRE - Fire Bell
What are the oral warnings of an ENG FIRE, TAIL P HOT and FIRE DET FAIL?
TAIL P HOT - Repetitive Chime (Triple)
What are the oral warnings of an ENG FIRE, TAIL P HOT and FIRE DET FAIL?
FIRE DET FAIL - Single Chime
Name the 5 actions that take place when the FIRE handle is pulled?
Main and Reserve squibs are armed
Name the 5 actions that take place when the FIRE handle is pulled?
Fire Bell, Master Warning are cancelled
Name the 5 actions that take place when the FIRE handle is pulled?
Generator field relay opens
Name the 5 actions that take place when the FIRE handle is pulled?
HP, Engine bleed valve closes
Name the 5 actions that take place when the FIRE handle is pulled?
Fuel shutoff valve closes
Which aircraft compartments have smoke detection?
Avionics compartment
Which aircraft compartments have smoke detection?
Lavatory
Which aircraft compartments have smoke detection?
Cargo compartments
What the sources of power?
Avionics compartment - Left Battery Bus
What the sources of power?
Lavatory - Right Battery Bus
What the sources of power?
Cargo compartments - Right Battery Bus
AVIONIC SMOKE (red) indicates?
Illuminates flashing when smoke is detected in the avionics rack and remains illuminated until smoke dissipates sufficiently
LAV SMOKE (red) indicates?
Illuminates flashing when smoke is detected in the lavatory and remains illuminated until smoke dissipates sufficiently
CARGO SMOKE (red) indicates?
Illuminates flashing when smoke is detected in the cargo compartment and remains illuminated until smoke dissipates sufficiently
How many Halon extinguishing bottles are available for the Cargo compartments?
2
Where are they are located?
Aft of the C2 cargo compartment
What type of bottles are they?
Dual-wall, a bottle within a bottle
How are the cargo fire Halon bottles activated?
FIRE EXT switches located on the CARGO FIRE EXTG panel
When discharged what happens?
Outer bottle rapidly floods the compartment - Inner bottle slowly discharges to maintain a high concentration of Halon
With both bottles discharged how long is the fire suppression time?
60 minutes
Aircraft limitations require that the fire bottles not be discharged within how many minutes of each other?
2 Minutes
What is the reason for this limitation?
Prevent excessive pressure buildup within the compartment and subsequent blowout of the pressure relief panel
Illumination of the CARGO EXTG (white) light indicates?
Low pressure is detected in the respective fire bottle
How long will it take for this light to illuminate?
Up to 15 minutes
How is fire extinguished within the avionics rack?
With the Halon extinguisher located behind the FO seat, it is discharged through a port located on the upper bulkhead behind the Captain
How is the Halon distributed?
The port is connected to a manifold which directs the agent into all areas of the avionics rack
How is fire extinguished in the lavatory?
Halon extinguisher which protects the lavatory trash bin
How is the Halon extinguisher activated?
Discharges automatically via blowout of a heat-sensitive plug
