SA known to be a big country in many ways, one being their international influence. Resins for this are influence within Africa, BRICS, G77 and G20, role in United Nations security council where they can apply international sanctions and authorise military actions. SA was a member between 2019 and 2021, this essay will discuss many different factors to SA international influence.

When SA was in the unsc they made important decisions which has influence on countries at war such as Syria. This shows their great influence in wars outside SA when using the powers of the unsc. Furthermore each non permanent member gets 2 months as President to set a topic at the top of the agenda SA put peace and security as there’s. This shows SA being in the unsc creates large influence as they set agenda for un which influence other counties. Overall important factor however sa are not a member anymore limiting influence.

G77 and G20

SA are in G77 a group which promotes interests of developing countries and G20, are only of 5 countries to be in both. Shows greatness of international influence as there are few in both groups. Puts them in stronger positions to improve relations. Until 2023 SA only African member in G20, they represent Africa issues. Eg. In 2023 successfully campaigned to make the AU a member of G20. This shows SA influence on foreign countries and brought more awareness to Africa by having the AU join. Overall being in G77 and G20 can create influence, they are not in G7 limiting influence.

BRICS represents a combined 32% of the gdp therefore by SA being a member able to build alliances with powerful countries and assert global influence through economic cooperation. However SA is seen as a minor member of BRICS comparing them to Russia and china this limits their influence on big countries and they have more influence than SA. Overall BRICS important factor, let’s them create alliances with big countries although it is mainly economic alliance. However SA have been involved in military training exercises with Russia and china.
