SA:V Ratio Flashcards
Why can cells only grow to a certain size?
The cell will not be able to diffuse materials the rate the cell requires them if they are too large.
What is surface area?
The surface area of a cell is the outside area of a cell. The function of the cell surface area is to control the removal of wastes and absorption nutrients.
What is volume?
The volume of a cell is the amount of substance or space inside a cell. The volume of a cell determines the metabolic needs and wast production.
What happens if the SA:V ratio decreases?
The decrease in SA:V will limit the efficiency with which substances can move into or out of the cell. Therefore, movement will occur at a more efficient rate if the cell has a large surface area compared to its volume.
