Diffusion Flashcards
What is a solution?
A mixture of 2 or more substances (a solute and a solvent)
What is a solute?
A substance that is dissolved in a solution
What is a solvent?
The dissolving agent, a substance which the solute dissolves into (eg. water)
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the process by which molecules or ions of liquids/gases move from regions of high concentration to low concentration.
Where does movement of molecules occur?
Across the cell membrane and up or down a concentration gradient.
Is moving from areas of high concentration or low concentration moving up or down the concentration gradient?
Down
What is simple diffusion?
Simple diffusion is the simple and unaided movement of molecules through a cell membrane.
What is the point of the concentrations becoming equal?
Dynamic Equilibrium no. molecules entering = no. molecules exiting
What is facilitated Diffusion?
Is when transport proteins assist particles to diffuse across a membrane as their molecules are too big.
What are the two types of transport proteins?
- Carrier proteins
2. Channel proteins
