SA - The Self Flashcards
Self-concept
Self concept is the collection of information, ideas, attitudes and beliefs we have about ourselves.
Self-esteem
Self-esteem is the level of satisfaction and pride that individuals have in the self.
Self-efficacy
Self-efficacy is the individual’s sense of being able to manage a task effectively and successfully in a particular domain. Our ‘can do’ judgement of ourselves.
How does self concept change from childhood to adulthood
Self-concept changes with age, circumstance and audience. Young children think they are good and capable at everything. System and development changes this as they get older. Initially, they have concrete, observable characteristics of self and are very positive. “I am the fastest runner in Australia!”
Middle childhood - categories of information, describe strengths and weaknesses
Later childhood - firmer sense of stable characteristics, smart, nice, dumb, can see difference in categories
Adolescence - sense of self with friends, with general peer group. Depends on subject in school
