SA Practical 3 Palpations Flashcards
L4 spinous process
find the top of the iliac crest and move medially
T12 spinous process
right about the region of your belly button- you can also feel for your last rib. Sometimes easier in prone
T7 spinous process
slide over from inferior angle of scapula
T2 spinous process
slide over from superior angle of scapula
C7 spinous process
the big nobby one- T1 is under it. You can tell it’s C7 by flexing (it will ride up) and extension, it will come back down
C2 spinous process
go down from nuchal line
Ligamentum Nuchae
fibrous tissue on the cervical spine (right down from occipital protrubrence)
Transverse process of C1
goto mastoid process, go posteriorly a little and rotate/ turn head 45degrees towards opposite side
Thoracic transverse processes
goto spinous process, go laterally fall into lamina groove, and then keep going laterally and feel the bone
Lumbar transverse processes
goto spinous process, go laterally fall into lamina groove, and then keep going laterally and feel the bone
Lamina groove (cervical, thoracic, lumbar)
just lateral to the spinous process, dips inward
Xiphoid process
move from ribs in and up, not everyones pops out
Sternal angle
kind of a groove where manubrium becomes the body you move up the body- inferior from manubrium
First rib
directly beneath the clavicle, more towards the back, Have patient supine. but you feel by having them elevate their clavicle.Going over your clavicle more posteriorly and pushing down. With your partner supine elevate the scapula. Place your fingers between the clavicle and the trapezius at the posterior triangle. It’s kind of on top of your clavicle
Second rib
slide below the clavicle and explore the 2nd rib
Eleventh and twelfth ribs
kind of belly button level towards back
Abdominal aorta
2 inches above belly button and kind of push down
Spleen (see addendum below)
on the left side under ribcage. Have partner inhale and exhale
Liver (see addendum below)
on the right side under ribcage. Have partner inhale and exhale.
External Occipital Protuberance-
-have partner supine, place hands under skull and feel for the protuberance
the bump right at the back of your head in the middle
Superior Nuchal Lines
-have partner supine, place hands under skull, goto external occipital protuberance and follow it out laterally. Come off of external occipital protrubrence, go diagnolly down laterally
PARIETAL BONES
goto nuchal line and go up
Mastoid process
just behind the ear
part of your temporal bone
Zygomatic arch
goto just in front of earlobe and theres a ridge
-part of temporal bone
Glabella
area of skin without hair between the eyebrows
Supraciliary arch
arch where your eyebrows are located
Supraorbital foramen
- where?
- what exits it?
- and what’s deep to it?
- Follow medially along supracillary arch until you find a rounded, flat area, roughly at the medial corner of eyebrow.
- This is where the supraorbital nerve exits
- Frontal sinus is deep to it
Nasal bone, nasion
junction between nasal and frontal bones)
Infraorbital foramen
where?
what runs through it?
what is deep to it?
- just lateral to the inferior medial orbit of the eye.
- It is home to the infraorbital nerve.
- Maxillary sinus is deep to this.
Zygomatic bone
go a little bit more anterior of the zygomatic arch
Maxilla
where we feel our upper teeth to the side/ under nose
Body of the mandible
flat surface below teeth- the front of your chin
Base of the mandible
edge, jawline
Angle of the mandible
posterior end- the curved portion
Ramus of the mandible
area above and posterior to the angle, its kind of under the ear
Condyle of mandible
anterior to ear canal- open and close mouth and you can feel it better
Coronoid process
anterior to condyle and open mouth and its like the second bump in front. It’s a little inferior
Mental protuberance
front midline of the jaw
Cricoid cartilage
right below adams apple (laryngeal prominance) (BELOW THYROID)
Thyroid cartilage
the bump in your throat- adams apple butterfly at the very top (MIDDLE)
Hyoid bone
go up above the thyroid cartilage (Adams apple), when you swallow it pops out, right under chin (TOP)
Thyroid gland
Under Adams apple, lateral and under cricoid cartilage ring (which is under Adams apple)
Posterior cervical triangle is bound by? and what’s inside?
Bound anteriorly by SCM, posteriorly by upper traps, inferiorly by clavicle.
Inside the triangle: 1st rib and scalenes
Anterior cervical triangle is bound by? and what’s inside?
Bound anteriorly by midline of the neck, laterally by SCM, superiorly by base of mandible.
Inside the triangle: Carotid pulse, submandibular and tonsilar lymph nodes, and thyroid gland
Common carotid artery
kind of behind SCM, you can feel a strong pulse
temporal artery
kind of where your temple is you can feel a fainter pulse (in front of ear and a little superior?)
Facial artery
just lateral to ends of mouth
Facial nerve
To Zanzibar By Motor Car Temporal (runs through temple up forehead) Zygomatic (zygomatic arch) Buccal (a little above mouth) Mandibular (just under mouth) cervicle- (mid neck)
Parotid gland
Kind of posterior to your mouth
Submandibular gland
go underneath the base or the edge of your mandible (kind of curl fingers under to where your neck and angle meet)
