A

Ed Mckinley described him as “an amiable eccentric as single minded as an arrow in flight”

They arrived at the Castle Garden in NYC on March 10, 1880. (they were not the first of William Booth’s followers to set foot in America. ( in 1872 James Jermy, an English immigrant to Canada and member of the Christian Mission came to Cleveland, Ohio where he joined in ministry with a Methodist Episcopal preacher, James Fackler to start the Christian Mission. but General Booth was unable to send help and by Oct 1875, Fackler, in ill health returned to the South and Jermy to the U.K.

Captain Emma Westbook was the chaperone & matron for the 6 lassie lieutenants who had most of their cadet training on the ship.

2= at the Harry Hill’s Variety Theatre on Houston Street in N.Y.C. on March 14, 1880. The next meeting was held at the Hudson river Hall, owned by a christian gentleman.

James “Ash barrel Jimmy” Kemp was saved, making him the first convert in America.

James Kemp was born in England to a poverty-stricken family and orphaned at 6. One biographer says of him, he was “a battered child, a battered adult and an alcoholic by the age of 7.” He emigrated to the United States at age 18 and lived in the streets or in jail. He was usually drunk. He was once found by a policeman stuffed upside down into an ash barrel and badly beaten after a drunken spree. He was given the nickname “Ash barrel Jimmy.” When a frustrated Judge sent him to the Salvation Army to see if that would do him any good,

A

because the major of N.Y. refused to allow open-air meetings Railton went to Philadelphia where he established the first National Headquarters. (eventually moving it to New York City).

2= he published the “Salvation News” in May, 1880, and by the end of that month the statistics were 8 corps, 16 officers, 40 cadets, 412 privates (soldiers).

A

in January, 1881 Railton was in St. Louis, MO, where he published the first American “War Cry,” and preached on the frozen Mississippi river because he could not find a hall to rent. and here he received the cablegram from General Booth ordering him back to London.

JOHN MILSAPS was one of Newton’s converts and became the first to be commissioned as officer in California.

Note: when Moore left the international Salvation Army and set up the Salvation Army of America, taking the crest with the crown and the “War Cry”, many salvationists followed him including the pioneer Emma Westbrook.

A

the young Divisional Commander who replaced Railton in NYC.
he and W. Booth, disagreed over matters of incorporation. Booth did not understand the law in the USA would not allow a foreigner to own property.
Moore than took out a us citizenship so that he could hold, property in the founder’s name, Moore than asked Booth to allow him to have the Army in America incorporated. but booth refused, he felt that it will separate the army in the USA.

when a NJ corps incorporated themselves, Moore incorporated the Army without Booth approval in October 1884. IHQ send auditors. and Moore was relieved of his duties for incorporating the Army without Booth permission and refusing his new appointment to Africa.

Major Frank Smith was a strong leader and capable administrator sent from London. who replaced Moore.

He first used the CREST with the eagle on the “war cry,” on Nov, 1885.
(this CREST remained in use for the Army in the USA until the statute of limitations ran out in the 1960’s and we reverted to the international crest with the CROWN)

2= there were corps in 312 cities and 650 officers.
but he labeled the salvationist who left with moore “traitors” and his attitude was unforgiving, and made no effort to win them back. he than took over the Social Work

it gradually declined. and he was deposed as leader by his advisory council.
Colonel Richard Holz became the leader and sought for reconciliation with Booth’s Army.

2= the founder’s Second son BALLINGTON and his wife Maud Charlesworth Booth were appointed Commanders of the army in the usa in 1889, on October 17, 1889 i meeting in Saratoga Springs, New York,.

3=Holtz and 30 other officers including Emma Westbrook were restored to the international Salvation Army.

he was stubborn and high-minded, pushing his ideas rather than seeking compromise.

2=William booth was now leaving the day to day running of the Army world wide to his Chief of the Staff, Bramwell.

3=the two often failed to see eye to eye. Bramwll felt that Ballington was becoming too independent of IHQ.
Ballington felt that IHQ had no understanding of the differences found in other cultures, and they had reservation about the lack of sacramental observances, and thought that Bramwell’s leadership style was despotic and unbending.
Bramwell felt that they had to be transferred. and when farewell orders came from the General in Jan, 1896 they were unexpected and unwelcome.

His new wife was Emma Moss Booth, second daughter of the Founders, and added her name to his: Booth-Tucker (a custom with the sons-in-law of William Booth). Medical work, work with children and other ministries were established.

Frederick deLatour Tucker, was a Christian serving with the Civil service in India was introduced to The Salvation Army by reading the “War Cry.” He went to London and met William Booth in 1881 and became an officer.

from 1896-1904 were capable leaders. he convinced W.B. to incorporate the Army.

1= and in April 28, 1899 the New York Act of Incorporation of the Salvation Army became law.

2=the Booth Tuckers expanded Social work, developed young people’s work and consolidated the officer training program.
