SA GIT Flashcards
describe how you would place an esophagostomy feeding tube
MAKE SURE ANIMAL IS ANESTHETIZED & INTUBATED
1. premeasure the length of the tube to be inserted from mid cervical esophagus to the 8th or 9th rib
2. insert carmalts or other angled forceps into the oral cavity in the neck region and push the forceps so you can see where the tip lies from the outside
3. use a 15 blade to make a small incision over the tip of the forceps just enough so that the feeding tube distal end can be pulled through.
4. once the tub exits the mouth, redirect the tube back into the esophagus to the premeasured location
5. preform once suture through the skin beside the tube, then do a finger trap suture with 6 throws
6. wrap the tube in a gauze square and then use white gauze to wrap around the neck, followed by vet wrap MAKE SURE IT IS NOT TIGHT
how do you know if your esophagostamy tube is placed correctly?
radiographs
what are the steps to preform a gastri tube placement in a dog?
premeasure until the last rib, lubricate your tube, put a roll of tape into the dog’s mouth, pass the tube gently as the animal swallows, never force the tube. When removing the tube, be sure to kink the tube before pulling out
how do you tell if your gastric tube is in the stomach?
palpation of two tubes (trachea and your feeding tube), blowing into the tube and auscultating stomach for bubbles, placing water in the tube and monitoring for a cough, lack of condensation on the tube
describe how you would do a nasopharyngeal tube placement in a cat
- premeasure the length to 8/9 rib
- place a drop of anesthetic solution into both nostrils
- direct the tube into the nostril in a ventro-medial fashion, should be no resistance
- stop of premeasured distance and use a buttefly tape and suture to secure the tube to the cat
how would you tell your nasoesphageal tube placement was correct?
infuse saline and wait fora cough, and RADIOGRAPHS!
