• first I would identify where I need to poke, caudal to the xiphoid and slightly to the right of midline to avoid the spleen
• clip the hair in this area and preform a dirty prep
• draw up 3mls lidocaine, inject 1cc into the skin and 2cc deep into the muscle
• preform a brief second prep
• open the glove package and set up a sterile field with a 15 blade, a teat cannula, and sterile gauze
• hold the 15 blade by the shank and make a stab incision
• push the teat cannula through a square of sterile gauze and then push it through the body wall and peritoneal lining
• have an assistant collect samples in an EDTA and red top tube (be sure to shake out excess EDTA from purple top)
• twist or flick the teat cannula to get fluid
• remove teat cannula and apply pressure
