steps for placing a catheter in the horse
A
- hold off the vein to check for fill and to visualize the vein
- clip the hair with wide margins
- surgically prepare the area with 3 clorohex and 3 saline/alcohol gauze
- open glove pack and open everything you need onto the sterile field: needle and syringe for flush, cather, extension set
- put on gloves using open glove technique
- using the needle and syrgine, draw up some sterile saline and prime the catheter and extension set
- with left hand, hold off the vein while you hold the catheter in your right hand, making sure to have your index finger over the hub
- hold the catheter at a 45 degree angle and poke da vein, release finger from hub and check for blood
- put your finger back on the hub, then at a more shllow angle, advance the catheter in a little more, about 1cm
- check for blood again by releasing index finger
- reach over and hold the stylet with your left hand stabilizing yourself against the animal, and use your right hand to push the catheter into the vein
- hold off the jugular again to check for blood flow, then attach extension set
- flush the catheter with saline
- use 2 sutures to secure catherter and extension set in place
