What is the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis?
Idiopathic autolysis and trypsin release - sterile inflammation
What are the most common clinical signs of pancreatitis?
Lethargy, dehydration, anorexia, vomiting, abdominal pain
What other inflammatory processes may pancreatitis be associated with in the cat?
Enteritis and cholangitis
What biochemical changes occur with pancreatitis?
Increased lipase, amylase, pancreatic lipase (Total lipase just as good)
How can pancreatitis be treated?
Nutritional support - reduce food intake, fluid therapy, analgesia, SBI antibiotics, feed PO once vomiting stops
What types of analgesics should be used with cases of pancreatitis?
NOT NSAIDS
Opioids - fentanyl, ketamine, hydromorphone,
What pathology is associated with EPI in dogs?
Young - pancreatic atrophy/ hypoplasia
Old - chronic pancreatitis
What clinical signs are associated with EPI?
Steatorrhoea, polyphagia, coprophagia, poor condition/ coat, vomiting
What test gives a definitive EPI diagnosis?
Faecal elastase, TLI
What dietary management should be employed for animals with EPI?
Feed highly digestible diets !!
What substance in the body is a prognostic indicator of EPI?
Cobalamin
DGGR lipase
Correlated with pancreatitis
SPLI
Snap test - more sensitive than lipase or amylase
