What is choke?
Oesophageal obstruction
What are the most common areas for oesophageal obstruction?
Proximal cervical, distal cervical region
What are the risk factors for oesophageal obstruction
Carrots, apples, extra-luminal masses, functional abnormalities
You are presented with a horse coughing, dysphagic and food and saliva at the nostrils. What might you expect?
Choke
What management would be recommended for a horse with choke?
May resolve spontaneously, sedation, (buscopan, oxytocin, calms horse and lowers head), pass NGI, oesophageal lavage
How would you deal with an unresolved/ recurrent case of choke?
Repeat lavage, endoscopy, lavage under GA, surgery may be indicated (rare)
Explain the pathogenesis of carbohydrate overload.
- Carb overload, 2. increased bacterial fermentation, 3. reduced pH of gut and intestinal mucosa damage, 4. endotoxin absorption, 5. colic, 6. SIRS, laminitis, diarrhoea
What are the three main categories of causes of dysphagia?
Pain, neurogenic, obstructive
