S6 Weight & Balance Flashcards
Can the C150 be equipped with a child seat? If so, where can the child seat be installed?
Yes. The child seat can be installed in Baggage Area 1.
What is the standard moment arm distance in inches for the Front Seats? What is the range that can be used for the position of the front seats?
Standard is 39 inches.
Range of 33 - 41 inches.
What is the moment arm distance in inches for Baggage Area 1?
64 inches.
What is the moment arm distance in inches for Baggage Area 2?
84 inches.
What is the moment arm distance in inches for the aft baggage wall?
94 inches.
What is the reference datum that is used for weight and balance in the C150?
Front face of the firewall.
What is the Centre of Gravity Range for the C150?
Forward limit - 31.5 in aft of datum at 1280 lbs or less. 32.9 in aft of datum at 1600 lbs.
Aft limit - 37.5 in aft of datum at all weights.
What is the maximum landing weight of the C150?
1600 lbs, same as maximum takeoff weight.
What is the maximum weight allowed in Baggage Area 1 on the C150?

1111 lbs.
What is the Maximum Useful Load of the C150 Commuter?
489 lbs.
How is Va affected by the total weight of the airplane?
The principal behind Va is to ensure that the airplane does not exceed its maximum load factors while in flight due to a strong gust or turbulence.
Maneuvering speed is based on the airplanes gross weight. If the weight decreases so does Va and vise versa.
Essentially, if a strong gust or turbulence is experienced in flight it can increase AOA (which is an increase in lift) and result in a sudden rise in G-Forces acting on the airplane. The Va ensures that the plane will stall (exceed critical AOA) before such damaging forces can act on the plane.
A heavier airplane requires a much larger gust to change its AOA as compared to a lighter airplane. Also, a slower airplane requires a larger AOA to remain level in flight (bigger AOA = AOA is closer to critical AOA). Therefore it is safer for the heavier airplane to fly at a higher Va than a lighter airplane because the lighter airplane is more susceptible to increasing its AOA (resulting in higher Load Factors) due to gusts and turbulence than the heavier airplane.
How much does 1 gallon of aviation fuel weigh?
6 lbs.
