Q

What is the meaning of viscosity in terms of oil? Why should one viscosity be used in the winter and a different in the summer?

A

Viscosity is the measure of a liquids resistance to flow.

A winter grade oil is used during cold weather since it was designed to be thin and flow more easily (low viscosity) in low temperatures. In the summer, you swap out the winter oil for a thicker one (higher viscosity) since hot temperatures thin out oil.

17
Q

What is the definition of KCAS?

A

Knots Calibrated Airspeed. This is indicated airspeed corrected for position and instrument error and expressed in knots.

18
Q

What is the definition of KIAS?

A

Knots Indicated Airspeed. This is the speed shown on the indicator and expressed in knots.

19
Q

What is the definition of KTAS?

A

Knots True Airspeed. This is KCAS corrected for altitude and temperature.

20
Q

What is the definition of Va?

A

Maneuvering Speed. This is the maximum speed at which you may use full deflection of the control surfaces without causing structural damage to the aircraft.

21
Q

What is the definition of Vfe?

A

Maximum Flap Extended Speed. The highest permissible speed in which flaps can be extended.

22
Q

What is the definition of Vno?

A

Maximum Structural Cruising Speed. This is the speed that should not be exceeded except when in smooth air, then only with caution.

23
Q

What is the definition of Vne?

A

Never Exceed Speed. This is the speed limit that may not be exceeded at any time.

24
Q

What is the definition of Vsi?

A

Stalling Speed with Flaps not extended.

25
Q

What is the definition of Vso?

A

Stalling Speed with Flaps extended.

26
Q

What is the definition of Vx?

A

Best Angle of Climb Speed. The speed which results in the greatest gain of altitude in a given horizontal distance.

27
Q

What is the definition of Vy?

A

Best Rate of Climb Speed. The speed which results in the greatest gain in altitude in a given time.

28
Q

What is the definition of Tare?

A

Tare is the weight of chocks, blocks, stands…etc used when weighing an airplane and is included in the scal readings. Tare is deducted from the scale reading to obtain the actual (net) airplane weight.

29
Q

What is the definition of Standard Empty Weight?

A

The weight of a standard airplane, including unusable fuel, full operating fluids and full engine oil.

30
Q

What is the definition of Basic Empty Weight?

A

The standard empty weight plus the weight of optional equipment.
