S4 - Human resources Flashcards
Why is internal organisation important ?
It makes it easy for everybody in the business to know who is responsible for what and helps the company to make sure it has people in every job role - most firms have a hierarchical structure.
What are the four basic layers or hierarchy ?
Directors - responsible for businesses strategy, managers (senior/middle/junior) - organise carrying out of directors strategy, supervisors - look after specific projects, and operatives - workers not responsible for other staff.
What is the chain of command ?
The chain connecting the directors (at the top) to the operatives (at the bottom).
What is delegation ?
The action that occurs at each level in the hierarchy where a certain amount of responsibility is passed on to people in the level below.
What is the span of control ?
The number of workers who report to one manager in a hierarchy.
What is a tall organisational structure ?
One that has a long chain of command where each manager has a narrow span of control - can be more effective as managers have to monitor fewer people.
What is a flat organisational structure ?
There is a short chain of command and each manager has a wide span of control - can be difficult to manage many employees at once.
