Ça
"Ça" is a demonstrative pronoun, meaning "this" or "that." It is less formal and used to refer to things, ideas, or situations in general. Used mostly in spoken French. 🔹 Examples: Ça marche ! → "It works!" Ça dépend du temps. → "It depends on the weather." Ça sent bon. → "That smells good." Ça suffit ! → "That's enough!"
26
Il
"Il" is an impersonal subject pronoun, often used in set expressions or with impersonal verbs. It is used in formal or neutral language. It is necessary with verbs that do not have a clear subject. 🔹 Examples: Il est minuit. → "It is midnight." Il fait froid. → "It is cold." Il reste 10 minutes. → "There are 10 minutes left." Il faut travailler. → "It is necessary to work."
27
Ça/Il
If the sentence describes weather, time, or necessity, use "il". If the sentence refers to an idea, situation, or something previously mentioned, use "ça".
28
conditionnel passé
The conditionnel passé is used to express hypothetical situations in the past, regrets, or missed opportunities. It follows this formula: (Subject) + (Auxiliary verb in Conditional) + (Past Participle) (Avoir / Être in Conditional) + Past Participle
29
Conditional ("If" Clauses)
These express a past hypothetical (something that didn’t happen). 🔹 Formula: Si + Plus-que-parfait (imparfait+ past) → Conditionnel Passé 🔹 Examples: Si j'avais su, je ne serais pas venu(e). → "If I had known, I wouldn’t have come." Si elle avait étudié, elle aurait réussi. → "If she had studied, she would have passed."
30
Should Have / Ought to Have
To express something that should have happened but didn’t, use: 🔹 Formula: Aurait dû + Infinitive 🔹 Example: Il aurait dû réviser au lieu de bavarder. → "He should have revised instead of chatting."
31
Could Have
To say something could have happened but didn’t, use: 🔹 Formula: Aurait pu + Infinitive 🔹 Example: Il aurait pu y avoir un accident. → "There could have been an accident."
32
Would Have
For indirect speech or expressing expectations about the past, use: 🔹 Formula: Conditionnel Passé (Avoir / Être) + Past Participle 🔹 Example: Je pensais que tu serais parti(e) plus tôt. → "I thought you would have left earlier." Elle se demandait si elle aurait fini avant minuit. → "She wondered if she would have finished before midnight."
