What are chronic/long term conditions?
Conditions which can only be controlled and not cured at current.
Life of person is often forever altered (no return to ‘normal’)
What is an example of a long term condition?
Rheumatoid arthritis
How much of the health care budget is spent on caring fo people with LTCs?
70%
What are the two theories of experience of illness?
- Functional - parson’s ‘sick role’ - relationship between society and individual - person is sanctioned from deviant behaviour as long as seeking professional advice
- Interpretative - goffman’s ‘stigma’ - how individuals make sense of their illness drawing on experience and understandings
What are the limitations of the ‘sick role’?
- not all illnesses are temporary
- doesn’t acknowledge differences between people
- doesn’t acknowledge agency
What is discreditable stigma?
Not seen but if found leads to stigma
E.g. mental illness and HIV
What is discredited stigma?
Physically visible/well known stigma that sets them apart
E.g. physical disability
What is enacted stigma?
Real experience of prejudice, etc as the consequence of a condition
What is felt stigma?
Fear of enacted stigma and shame leading to concealment of disease
What is illness work?
Period leading up to getting diagnosis and dealing with physical side of illness
What is every day life work?
Actions and processes invoked in managing the condition and it’s impact
What is identity work?
Establishment and maintenance of an acceptable identity
What is emotional work?
Work to protect the emotional wellbeing of others
What is biographical work?
Interaction between body and identity - continua/occasional reconstruction of their life
