What is the biomedical model?
Focused on biology side (no psychological/social factors)
What is the biopsychosocial model?
Combines psychological, biological and social factors into healthcare
What is a negative definition of health?
Health = absence of illness
What is a functional definition of health?
Health is the ability to do certain things
What is the positive definition of health?
Health is a stage of wellbeing and fitness
What is health behaviour?
Activity that impacts on health/helps prevent illness
What is illness behaviour?
Activity of a person to define illness and seek solution
What is sick role behaviour?
Formal response to symptoms including seeking formal help and action of person as patient
What factors influence illness behaviour?
- culture
- visibility of symptoms
- extent to how the symptoms disrupt life
- frequency and persistence of symptoms
- tolerance threshold
- information and understanding
- availability of resources
- lay referral
What is the lay referral system?
The chain of advice-seeking contacts which the sick make with other lay people prior to or instead of seeking help from healthcare professionals
Why is lay referral important?
Helps you understand:
- why people delay in seeking help
- how, why and when people consult a doctor
- your role as a doctor in their health
- use of health services and medication
- use of alternative medicines
What are the three broad groups of patients in terms of whether they accept e.g. medication
- Deniers and distancers
- Acceptors
- Pragmatists
What are pragmatists?
Use preventative medication but only when symptoms/disease is bad
Accepted disease but see as a mild acute illness
What are deniers and distancers?
Claim symptoms don’t interfere with everyday life
Don’t take drugs
What are acceptors?
Accept diagnosis and take doctors advice and medication
