Describe how percussion differs in different lung conditions
Normal - resonant
Hyperresonant - pneumothorax
Dull - collapsed lung, pneumonia
Stoney dull - pleural effusion
What are the six cardinal symptoms of respiratory disease?
Breathlessness (dyspnoea), Cough, Chest pain, Wheeze/stridor, Sputum, Haemoptysis
What can cause instant breathlessness?
Pulmonary embolism or pneumothorax
What can cause acute (min to hours) breathlessness?
Asthma or pneumonia
What can cause gradual (days to weeks) breathlessness?
Lobar collapse or pleural effusion
What can cause chronic (months to years) breathlessness?
COPD or bronchiectasis
