Interdependence
How one person’s actions impact the other partner’s needs
Mutuality
considering two people a couple, when they start using “us” or “we” pronouns
What are the four attachment styles?
Secure, Preoccupied, Dismissive, and Fearful
What does interpersonal communication consist of?
The exchange of verbal and nonverbal messages between two people
Relational Communication
A subset of interpersonal communication that focuses on the expression and interpretation of messages within close relationships
Five characteristics distinguishing different relationship types
- Voluntary vs. involuntary
- Genetically-related vs. non-related
- Sexual vs. platonic
- Romantic vs. nonromantic
- Male/female vs. masculine/feminine
Role Relationships
no intimacy or connectedness, functional or task related, casual, interchangeable, temporary (example cashier, bank teller, etc.)
