Who were the Hutus?
one of two main indigenous groups in Rwanda, they took up majority of Rwanda’s population and were typically farmers and laborers
Who were the Tutsis?
The other indigenous group in Rwanda, was the minority of the population and were typically the wealthy and powerful people
What started the divide between the Hutus and Tutsis?
When Belgium held power over it as a colony, they marginalized the Hutus.
The Tutsis were favored and given more positions of powers
created resentment in the Hutus towards the Tutsis
How did the divide between the Hutus and Tutsis start unfolding?
in 1962 when Rwanda gained independence, the Hutus took over positions of power.
In resentment towards the Tutsis they segregated them
> displayed propaganda saying “cut the tall trees”
openly hostile towards the Tutsis
What major event started the genocide of Tutsis overnight?
In 1994 a plane carrying the Rwandan president (a Hutus) is shot down.
Hutus immediately blame the Tutsis for the assasination.
Overnight the Hutus begin finding Tutsis and killing them
How does the Rwandan government respond to the genocide?
They don’t do anything to stop the killing and encourage it with propaganda
How long did the genocide last?
3 months
What brought the Rwandan genocide to its end?
The UN sent peacekeepers to stop the violence.
By the time the peacekeepers were sent out the violence was already dying down.
Those who killed during the genocide were imprisoned.

There are towns with cheap living costs where Hutus and Tutsis live side by side.
