What was the apartheid?

A

The government segregated the 5 ethnic groups. The group you were in determined your living conditions (the lower the group the worse your living condition)
> prevented a mix of race

A

non-whites had to carry ID cards when moving between cities to show why they were there

What was the sharpsville massacre?

A

In 1960, unarmed blacks peacefully protested the pass law. Seeing this as a threat, police opened fire on the crowed.

How did the Sharpsville massacre affect Nelson Mandela?

A

Nelson Mandela, the president of the African National Congress, saw this and shifted from peaceful protest to violence.

Mandela still tried to minimize casualties but lives were still lost.

How did Nelson Mandela lead the rebellion?

A

Due to his use of violence he gets labeled as a terrorist and is arrested in 1962.

Mandela uses his time in prison to gain global publicity.

After his release in 1988, he continues to fight and later gets arrested for president post-apartheid
