Bolsheviks
•Bolsheviks: small, minority group who would give up anything for revolution
Problems w/ czar and Rasputin
Weak leader, wanted to overthrow Nicholas II
•–Factory workers discontented over poor working conditions and went on strikes (a stop work)
Mensheviks
Mensheviks: moderates who wanted support from many people for a revolution
Provisional Government
•Provisional (temporary) government established under Alexander Kerensky (Prime Minister)
–Decided to keep Russia in WWI (many opposed)
Soviets
•SOVIETS form - local political groups of workers, peasants, and soldiers (had more influence than provisional government!)
Bolshevik Revolution
•Bolshevik Red Guard (army) takes over provisional government
•Lenin makes changes:
–Distributes farmland to peasants
–Turns factories over to workers
Lenin in power
•Idea man; led Bolsheviks
–“Peace, Bread, and Land” (get out of the war, give food to the people, redistribute land among the people)
–“All power to the Soviets” – local people should have power, not a czar
Civil war red army white army
- Red Army (Bolsheviks) – goal was to defeat their enemies in Russia
- White Army - (Mensheviks, Royalists, foreigners, supporters of democracy) goal was to defeat Bolsheviks, which is what united them
Trotsky
- Commander of Red Army
- 4 million Russians die
- Red Army defeats White Army
Lenins economic policy
•New Economic Policy
•Peasants sell crops without having to turn them over to the government
–Government controls major industries, banks and communications
–Private ownership of some small factories, business and farms (this is capitalism)
–Foreign investment encouraged
