When did the Russian Revolution happen?
1917
What caused it?
Widespread discontent with Tsar Nicholas II rule, exacerbated by military failures in WWI, food shortages, etc
Who was Rasputin?
A confidant to the Romanov family, particularly Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra
What was Rasputin’s connections to the Romanov family?
He believed that he had the ability to heal their son, Alexei, who suffered with haemophilia, and his apparent success in alleviating his symptoms led to increased trust and reliance from the family
Why was Rasputin criticized for his lifestyle?
He was a heavy drinker and often took drugs. He involved himself in sexual promiscuity
How did Rasputin die?
He was lured to Yusupov’s palace, where he was fed cyanide-laced cakes and wine. When the poison seemed ineffective, he was shot multiple times. It was suggested that he survived briefly, leading to further attempts on is life, including being drowned and shot again, before he died
What happened to the Romanov family?
In 1918, Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, and their five children (Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei), and several servants, were executed by Bolshevik soldiers in the basement of Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg
